Recipient Profile

Leah's Family
About 7 years ago Leah was diagnosed with HIV along with her husband of 10 years. Being the mother of three boys they tried different types of treatment to battle the virus. Natural, pharmaceutical, and much prayer. Things were looking good, and they both were improving.

They spent a summer in a remote village in Mexico a few years back, training to become missionaries. Both Leah and her husband got quite sick on this journey. The sickness threw their immune systems into havoc and the HIV became AIDS.

Throughout it all, Leah continues to fight. Not just fight but live for others in the midst of a terrible illness. Numerous hospital stays, countless treatments and yet a smile of encouragement continues to shine for others.

The sickness and treatments have taken from this beautiful, prior model, her prized hair. She told me today, "I think I need a wig".

Curly Hair
Leah and I met when we were 4 years old at church. Since we were both short we decided to be friends. Leah and I were in the same kindergarten class, and were once in a play where she was a green frog and I a black beetle. Even though we are both still short, our friendship, though based on much more now, continues to grow. She is such a beautiful woman to me.

Ten years ago I lost my mother to breast. The night when she had to shave her hair due to the chemo treatments is engraved in my mind. Even though I was barley seventeen, I still remember thinking, "she shouldn't have to do that alone". Not one of her friends made that journey with her, and I promised that if ever another woman in my life had to go through the loss of her hair, I would go with her.

My hair is my most complimented feature being that it is naturally curly and now quite long. Leah has always loved my hair and I would love to give it to her.
